Our Story
“It started with a simple cup and a powerful idea; To share kindness and the Gospel, with every pour.”
Our Journey
It all began with a simple idea in January 2022. During a men's group discussion, Kenny Tharpe (Cup of Kindness Secretary) and his friends brainstormed ways to reach beyond the church walls.
Inspiration struck when one of the members felt the Holy Spirit guiding him to propose serving coffee and sharing the Gospel through a coffee cart. Kenny was thrilled, knowing this would be a meaningful way to save souls and serve the community with warmth and kindness.
The journey was not without its challenges. After months of searching, building, navigating permits, and choosing the perfect coffee blend, their dream cart was finally ready. On August 27th, 2023, at the Crosswalk Church Fall Launch event, Cup of Kindness served its first cups of coffee, and the event was a huge success!
Since then, Cup of Kindness has become a beloved presence, partnering with local businesses and churches, and serving at events like Virginia Beach Live! Each cup of coffee is a symbol of kindness, community, and the love of Jesus Christ.
“Someone handed me a pamphlet like this one during my Sophomore year of college. I was skeptical, thinking that, I didn't need this because I was pretty religious, went to church occasionally, and did the best I could. I thought about all the good things I had done and how I tried to help others. I mean, surely, I was going to heaven when I died!
But as I read the message I realized something was missing on the inside. Even though I tried hard, I still sinned and felt an emptiness in all my good works. I became conscious that I couldn't save myself. Jesus would have not needed to come down to die on the cross if I could have earned my way to heaven. There was only ONE WAY to eternal life in heaven- through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
I prayed a prayer that went something like this: ‘Lord Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner and that you died on the cross to take away my sins. Please forgive me of all my sins and come into my heart and life, at this moment. I realize you are the only way to heaven and I want you to take control of my life and destiny. In Jesus name Amen!’
Later that day, I felt peace and joy in my heart as the emptiness left. Jesus became real and alive in my heart. I now knew that I couldn't earn eternal life, but I was saved by grace through believing that Jesus did it all for me on the cross. I met God in a personal way that day and if you say this prayer sincerely God will supernaturally change your life too. That was over 30 years ago! Christ has been there every step of the way and has never failed me once. If you pray and ask Jesus into your life, He will never fail you, leave you, or forsake you!”
