Cup of Kindness: The Story of a Miracle in Costa Rica
How Pat and Jennifer Coghlan Followed God’s Calling to Reach the Next Generation
Pat and Jennifer Coghlan have spent the last several years preparing themselves for international ministry and evangelism. They completed the Evangelism FireCamp USA program titled “Evangelism Training and Equipping Retreat,” offered by Christ for all Nations, a global organization known for its decades of evangelistic work around the world. Their training equipped them with biblical teaching, outreach methods, and practical skills for sharing the Gospel with clarity and compassion.
Their preparation quickly turned into action. Pat and Jennifer traveled to Africa and the Philippines, where they spoke to students and young adults about the importance of making wise choices. Each visit opened a door to share the message of salvation. Across just three trips, more than forty thousand people made decisions to follow Christ. These experiences changed their lives and confirmed their calling.
A New Door Opens in Costa Rica
After returning from these international trips, Pat and Jennifer received an unexpected invitation to Costa Rica. Local leaders asked them to speak in schools and encourage students to make positive choices in life. They soon discovered that entering schools in Costa Rica was difficult and required approval that few evangelists ever received. What happened next can only be described as a miracle.
While attending a community gathering, Pat was asked to pray for the city’s newly elected mayor. As he prayed, the mayor broke down, wept, and decided to surrender his life to Jesus. Deeply moved, he asked how he could help the Coghlans. Pat’s request was simple. He asked for help getting into the local schools so he could speak to the students.
The mayor agreed without hesitation.
Soon after, one of the local pastors contacted a television news team. Reporters visited the schools to film Pat and Jennifer speaking to students, capturing their message of hope as the students listened from bleachers and classrooms across the region.
National Attention
A few days later, the government received a phone call from the owner of a major Costa Rican television station. After hearing the news coverage and seeing the impact in the schools, he encouraged the government to allow Pat and Jennifer to visit every school in the nation. Costa Rica has more than five thousand schools and more than one million students. The government identified bullying as one of the country’s greatest challenges among youth. They believed the Coghlans’ message of hope, compassion, humility, and salvation could help transform the next generation.
Pat immediately agreed to visit as many schools as possible.
A Year and a Half of Life Change
Over the next eighteen months, Pat and Jennifer visited schools across Costa Rica. They spoke in primary schools, high schools, and youth gatherings of all sizes. In one image, Pat is seen preaching to a large group of teenagers. In another, Jennifer stands before a room of primary school students as many raise their hands to accept Jesus.
Across this period, more than twenty-nine thousand students made decisions to follow Christ. At each school, they handed out brochures that explained the next steps in faith to help students build a foundation for their spiritual journey.
The Work Ahead
Costa Rica is divided into seven provinces. Cup of Kindness is currently serving in Guanacaste on the left side of the map and in parts of Puntarenas. There are still more than five hundred schools waiting for visits in Puntarenas and several hundred more in Guanacaste. Pat and Jennifer are also training local Costa Rican evangelists who want to help reach their own communities. Many of these evangelists live in poverty and face constant challenges, but they share a deep passion to reach the youth of their nation.
The government’s decision to grant permission for this work is historic. According to local officials, this is the first time in Costa Rica’s history that a document has been issued allowing a ministry team to visit every school in the country. It is considered a miracle and a rare opportunity. Pat and Jennifer do not know how long this door will remain open. They only know they need to move quickly and faithfully while it is open.
